Tsuyoshi Maekawa is a Japanese artist born in 1936. He is part of the second generation of the Gutai Art Association, a group of artists inspired by Western informal art and seeking an alternative to the geometric abstraction and figurative art of the 1950s. It was founded in 1954 and dissolved in 1972. This second generation shares the same interests as the first, with works that feature the nature of painting, but new interests also emerge with the introduction of industrial materials into the works. Maekawa's paintings have been shown in numerous exhibitions, including Gutai Retrospective at the Prefectural Museum of Art, Hyogo, in 2004 and Gutai: Splendid Playground at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York in 2013.
